A Story of Resilience and Family
Fernando Mendoza has become a name synonymous with success in college football. As the quarterback for Indiana football, he led his team to an unprecedented achievement: winning a Big Ten championship. His performance this season was nothing short of extraordinary, earning him a spot as one of the four finalists for the Heisman Trophy, an honor given to college football’s top player.
Mendoza’s journey to the spotlight is not just about his athletic prowess but also about the people who have supported him along the way. Among them is his mother, Elsa Mendoza, who has been a constant source of inspiration and strength.
The Woman Behind the Success
Elsa Mendoza, a former women’s tennis player at the University of Miami, has always been a significant figure in her son’s life. More than just a parent, she is his best friend and the person who fuels his determination. Her battle with multiple sclerosis (MS) has been a profound influence on Mendoza’s character and mindset.
Diagnosed with MS approximately 18 years ago, Elsa’s condition took a turn for the worse when she contracted COVID-19 five years ago. Despite the challenges, she continues to face each day with resilience and positivity. Her journey has not only shaped Mendoza’s perspective on life but has also inspired him to use his platform for good.
A Mother’s Strength
In an interview with Hoosiers Connect, Mendoza shared how his mother’s struggles have influenced him. “At this point, she has a tough time moving around and stuff like that, but her happiness, her joy and her determination is what inspires me every single day,” he said. “You know, if I’m in a workout and I’m feeling tired, you know, a little thought in my mind goes, ‘Maybe you should skip out on this set’ or something like that, I’ll be like, my mom is out here every single day putting a ton of work, a ton of dedication and still with a great attitude, a great positive attitude in everything she does.”
Elsa Mendoza’s impact extends beyond her personal story. In a letter published on The Players’ Tribune, she expressed how her son has made her battle with MS “so much easier.” She praised his unwavering support and the way he has kept her feeling seen and valued, no matter the circumstances.
Giving Back Through Action
Mendoza has taken it upon himself to raise awareness and funds for MS through various initiatives. This season, he partnered with two Bloomington-based restaurants — BuffaLouie’s and Gables Bagels — to create special menu items, the proceeds from which go directly to the National MS Society. At BuffaLouie’s, there is a burger called the “Mendoza Bros. Burger,” while Gables Bagels offers a “Mendoza Bros. Cubano” bagel sandwich.
Additionally, through his partnership with Adidas, Mendoza organized a shopping spree in New York City for four families affected by MS. Each family received $10,000, with the remaining funds being distributed as gift cards.
A Celebration of Love and Support
As Mendoza prepares for the Heisman Trophy ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 13, he will be accompanied by those closest to him, including his mother. Their bond is a testament to the power of love, resilience, and support. For Mendoza, the journey to this moment has been shaped by the strength of his family and the lessons learned from his mother’s fight against MS.
