Family Honors Katie and Noah Carrig After Killer’s Death

Family of Katie and Noah Carrig Speaks Out After Alleged Killer’s Death in Jail

The family of Katie and Noah Carrig has shared a heartfelt statement following the death of their loved ones, as well as the passing of the alleged perpetrator, Kidane Haile. The family expressed their deep sorrow and frustration over the loss of their daughter and grandson, who were taken from them in a tragic and violent manner.

Haile, 30, was found dead in the showers at the Erie County Correctional Facility in Alden around 9 p.m. on Wednesday night. Authorities are investigating the incident as an apparent suicide. He was charged with murder and arson for allegedly killing his girlfriend, Katie Carrig, and their newborn son, Noah, before setting their home on fire on October 18. The incident occurred on Norwood Avenue in the Elmwood Village area.

The family shared their grief and reflected on the lives of Katie and Noah, emphasizing how much they will be missed by those who knew them.

“We are beyond devastated by the tragic loss of Katie and Noah Carrig. Our family has been privately grieving this unimaginable tragedy every day since October 18, 2025,” the family’s statement said. “The real tragedy here is that Katie and Noah were taken from us far too soon and through an act of pure evil. The tragedy here is that Katie carried Noah for 9 months, loved him beyond measure, gave birth to him, only to hold him in her arms for 4 days.”

A Life Lost Too Soon

Katie was described as a caring and dedicated nurse who made a profound impact on everyone she met. Her family highlighted her compassion and the way she lived her life with grace and love.

“Katie was a caring and dedicated nurse,” the family wrote. “She gave back to the community and cared for people in such a profound and meaningful way. Katie was a loving mother, daughter, sister, friend, cousin, and niece.”

Noah, though only 4 days old, brought immense joy to the family. His parents were overjoyed at the arrival of their son, and the family often spoke about how much he resembled his mother.

“Noah was perfect, too,” the family’s statement read. “The tragedy is that we will never see the person that Noah would grow up to be. Noah brought so much joy to our lives for the short time he was with us; he was a bundle of innocence. He looked just like Katie. He was a beautiful baby boy.”

No Justice, Only Sorrow

The family also expressed their disappointment with the legal proceedings surrounding Haile. They took issue with statements from his attorney, who suggested that a severe, undiagnosed mental health condition may have contributed to the events leading to Haile’s arrest.

“For that attorney to turn this into a story about mental health is so wrong and disgusting. This isn’t a mental health issue, this is domestic violence, plain and simple,” the family responded.

Following Haile’s death, the Erie County District Attorney announced that the indictment against him would be dismissed once the office receives the death certificate.

Concerns About Prison Conditions

Taisha St. Jean Tard, who helped reestablish the Erie County Correctional Special Advisory Board, called the incident “disturbing.” She noted that Haile was in a location where inmates had free movement and no supervision during certain times.

“He was in a certain dormitory that they were allowed to freely walk, take care of yourself, go to the bathroom,” she said. “You don’t have a correctional officer with you in the shower.”

Erie County Legislator Lindsay Lorigo echoed these concerns, stating that justice should have been served in this case, particularly for the young child who lost his life.

“This is not the way that these things should happen,” Lorigo said. “Justice should have been served in this situation, if for nothing else, the sake of that poor kid.”

Remembering Katie and Noah

The family’s statement concluded with a powerful message about the importance of remembering Katie and Noah and honoring their lives.

“The tragedy here is that Katie and Noah will never have their day in court and no one will be held criminally responsible for such a heinous crime. Their lives were taken and their voices were silenced. Katie and Noah are the real victims here. Katie’s life matters. Noah’s life matters,” their statement concluded. “There will never be justice here. But we know the truth. And we will forever remember Katie and Noah for how they loved and how they lived. Their love and legacy will live on and they will never be forgotten.”
