Authorities have released a short surveillance video showing the suspect in connection with a mass shooting at Brown University in Rhode Island. The incident resulted in the deaths of two students and left nine others injured. Despite the release of the footage, the shooter remains at large, with officials describing him as a man dressed in black. No weapon has been recovered from the scene, and investigators are still working to determine how the individual entered the Barus & Holley building, where the shooting occurred.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley confirmed that law enforcement has retrieved shell casings from the location. However, he emphasized that specific details about the evidence will not be disclosed publicly. “Yes, it’s shell casings, but we’re not going to release any specific information about that type of evidence,” Smiley stated.
The night when six boys vanished without a trace continues to haunt a suburban town 30 years later. In another case, two individuals were accused of stealing $2 million worth of cryptocurrency and subjected to torture, including waterboarding, beatings, and sexual assault on a family.
Brown University President Christina Paxson addressed the tragedy during a press conference, confirming that the victims were students. “Our focus right now is on supporting the families who have been affected by this, families of the two students who sadly lost their lives today,” she said.
The surveillance clip shows the suspect wearing what appears to be a black beanie and dark clothing, walking around a corner moments after the shooting. His face is not visible in the footage. If you cannot see the video, click here.
According to Providence Deputy Police Chief Tim O’Hara, the suspect may have been wearing a camouflage mask. It is unclear how the individual, believed to be in his 30s, entered the building. However, because of finals week, there was significant foot traffic in the building, making it possible for the shooter to slip inside unnoticed, said Smiley.
President Donald Trump mentioned that he has been briefed on the shooting and noted that the FBI is on the scene. “God bless the victims and the families of the victims,” he wrote on Truth Social.

Initially, the president claimed the suspect was in custody, but later corrected himself. “The Brown University Police reversed their previous statement — The suspect is NOT in custody,” he said.
Speaking to reporters outside the White House, Trump described the shooting as “a terrible thing,” adding, “All we can do right now is pray for the victims and for those that were very badly hurt.” He urged people to “just pray” for the victims and promised to provide updates later.
Brown University President Christina H. Paxson called the incident “a deeply tragic day for Brown, our families, and our local community.” She expressed sorrow over the loss of two community members and the injuries sustained by at least eight others. “In this moment, they are in critical but stable condition, but this is an evolving situation. Our hearts are with their families,” she said.
In an update, Brown University stated that law enforcement has established a perimeter around part of the university’s campus. Individuals already in residential buildings within the perimeter are advised to continue sheltering in place. “Police will enter all administrative (non-residential) buildings within the perimeter marked by the red boxes on the map to escort all individuals to safe locations outside of the perimeter,” the update read.
